Windows Phone gains in Europe, iOS up in US: Survey

Windows-based smartphones are making significant inroads in Europe, while Apple’s iPhone is strengthening its position in the United States, a survey showed Monday.

Data from Kantar World panel ComTech for three month ending in August Showed Windows Phone, the mobile platform from Microsoft, has posted its highest ever sales share of 9.2 percent in the five major Europe markets.

Windows had a 12 percent share in Britain, 10.8 percent in France, 9.5 percent in Italy, 8.8 percent in Germany and 2.2 percent in Spain, the survey found.

“Windows Phone’s latest wave of growth is being driven by Nokia’s expansion into the low and mid range market with the Lumia 520 and Lumia 620 handsets,” said Kantar analyst Dominic Sunnebo.

“These models are hitting the sweet spot with 16 to 24 years-olds and 35 to 49 years-olds, two key groups that look for a balance of price and functionality in their smartphone,” he said.

Android, the Google platform used by Samsung and several other manufacturers, remains the top operating system across Europe with a 70 percent market share but it is being threatened by higher growth from Windows and Apple’s iOS, the survey found.

“After years of increasing market share, Android has now reached a point where significant growth in developed markets is becoming harder to find, “Sunnebo said.

“Android’s growth has been spearheaded by Samsung, but the manufacturer is now seeing its share of sales across the major European economic dip year as a sustained comeback from Sony, Nokia and LG begins to broaden the competitive landscape.

In the United States, Android has also seen its market share drop to 55.8 percent from 60.7 percent a year earlier, while Apple’s share was up more than five percentage points at 39.3 percent. Windows rose to 3.0 percent from 2.6 percent.

Kantar said it expects Apple’s share “to spike in the coming months with the release of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5C,” unveiled on September 20.

Apple and Android are roughly even in Japan with 48.6 percent for iOS and 47.4 percent for Android. But the agreement with Japan’s largest carrier, NTT DoCoMo, for the first time makes it likely that Apple will pull ahead of Android in this market, according to Kantar.

Apple also made strong gains in Britain, France and Spain, the survey found.

Blackberry’s woes have deepened, with the Canadian firm accounting for just 2.4 percent of sales across the five European markets and 1.8 percent in the United States, Kantar said.

Apple new iPhone launch date is revealed

Apple shares gained ground Monday after a report saying the California tech giant was set to announce its next iPhone at an event September 10. In late morning trade, Apple shares were up 2.04 percent at $463.88.

The Dow Jones news website AllThingsD reported Sunday that Apple scheduled an event next month where it will announce its newest iPhone in an effort to regain ground lost to Samsung and other smartphone makers.

Details were not clear, but speculation has centered around whether Apple would shift its strategy to include a lower-cost handset to appeal to more consumers, especially in emerging markets.

Trip Chowdhry, analyst at Global Equities Research, said Apple appeared to be preparing "to declare thermo-nuclear war on Android," referring to the Google mobile operating system which has become dominant in the smartphone market.

Chowdhry said the launch "may be massively successful and probably one of the most successful launches."

"If Apple launches a cheaper iPhone, Apple will immediately gain market share against Android, as in many parts of the world, consumers are not well informed and are buying Android phones thinking that they are buying a cheaper iPhone," he said in a note to clients.

A recent IDC survey showed Apple's share of the global smartphone market slipped to 13.2 percent in the second quarter, from 16.6 percent a year ago, while Android's share rose to 79.3 percent.

Now HTC One makes an appearance in 'Blue'

HTC launched its flagship smartphone, HTC One in two colour variants, Black and Silver. Soon, the company also showcased the 'Glamour Red' version of the device. It looks like now the company seems to be gearing up for a fourth Blue colour variant of the phone, if a new rumour is to be believed.

Serial phone leaker @evleaks has posted an image of the HTC One in Blue colour. The image shows the front and back panel of the smartphone.

We had also reported about this earlier, when the company unveiled the Glamour Red version of the device.

There is also a news report suggesting that the Taiwanese handset maker is prepping the variant of its flagship smartphone for a specific carrier. Phonearena reports that, "Verizon's inventory systems have been updated with an additional SKU (stock keeping unit) code, HTC6500LVWBLU along with the description 'HTC One in Blue'.

Just to recap, HTC One features a 4.7-inch screen with full-HD display. It is powered by a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor along with 2GB of RAM. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, Infrared and Micro-USB. The smartphone was launched with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) along with a brand new version of Sense UI. It has received the Android 4.2 update, as well.

Meanwhile, HTC is busy promoting its next device, which is expected to be the One Max, on Twitter. The company posted a teaser video on Tuesday, suggesting something big is arriving.

The new video was tagged as 'Big Things Ahead' and showed a person with an HTC device (which we believe is the HTC One Max) that featured the same design as that of the HTC One. The person with the device was shown waiting for a helicopter's arrival and then the person who gets down from the helicopter gives a land slap to the first person. The device is visible twice in the video though it is not clear whether the device is the new One Max or the original flagship device.

LG G2 press images leak ahead of official launch

LG may be all set to unveil its new flagship smartphone G2 at an event in New York later on Wednesday, but that hasn't stopped the device from making yet another appearance.

The notorious @evleaks has posted some press images of the LG G2. The latest leaked press shots are in line with the previous leaks and show nothing new. One of the image shows the front panel of the yet to be announced smartphone that is dominated by the 5.2-inch display with thin bezel at the sides, while the back panel shows the rear camera along with an LED flash, power key and volume rocker keys.

The LG G2 has been hitting the rumour mills for a while now and has been spotted a number of times ahead of official launch. The G2 is rumoured to be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor coupled with 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel rear camera. The smartphone is also expected to be some thin that it features back-mounted volume controls, instead of ones on the side. It is likely to sport a 5.2-inch full-HD display and would run on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Earlier, LG also released a teaser video featuring the G2. The video ended with a teaser of the black round-edged device that clearly showed the rear camera with up and down arrows above and below it.

The company is aggressively promoting the handset globally with ad campaigns hitting the web and TV in various parts of the world.

With this the company also unveiled a series of colourful QuickWindow cases for its upcoming smartphone. The company announced that the all new line of premium cases for the LG G2 will be available at the same time as the smartphone. The cases will be available in seven different colours that include Black, White, Pink, Purple, Blue, Mint and Yellow.

Android 4.3 update - Rolling out to HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play editions

Google released the next iteration of Android operating system dubbed as version 4.3 Jelly Bean with the launch of its next generation Nexus tablets last month. The update was first rolled out to Nexus devices, with word that the Google Play editions would be next in line.

AnandTech claims both the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4 from Google Play are currently receiving OTA (over-the-air) update notifications. For the Samsung Galaxy S4 the update is around 150MB and for HTC One it's 180 MB.

The update lands in immediately after both HTC and Samsung released the Android 4.3 kernel sources online, according to the site. The Android 4.3 update for both devices have been developed by the OEMs and have no changes to the user-interface.

When Google announced the Google Play Edition devices, it promised quick updates on the device and a complete stock Android experience. With this update the Google Play Editions of Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One joins the list of devices running Android 4.3 that only included Nexus devices until now.

The Android 4.3 update comes with some new features like restricted profiles which enables users to restrict app usage and content consumption on an Android device, dialpad autocomplete that adds the autocomplete feature in the dialpad suggesting contact names or phone numbers when users start keying-in something, keyboard and input which now comes with an upgraded algorithm for tap-typing recognition that makes text input easier while chatting via messages or even while composing emails and new camera UI that offers a new updated Camera app that features a new arch based menu which makes it easier to control and switch camera settings.
